Water supply planning program
The St. Johns River Water Management District prepares water supply assessments and water supply plans every five years to meet the water supply planning provisions of Chapter 373, Florida Statutes.
Water supply assessments identify future water supply needs for a 20-year planning horizon and identify areas where those needs cannot be met by the water supply plans of major water users without causing unacceptable impacts to water resources and related natural systems. These areas are called priority water resource caution areas (PWRCAs).
The District also develops and implements water supply plans that identify programs and projects that will ensure adequate and sustainable water supplies are available to meet future water supply needs while protecting the environment.
The District’s water supply planning process is an open and public process, including local governments, public supply utilities, self-suppliers, and other affected and interested parties.
The District’s first Water Supply Assessment (WSA) was completed in 1998. It identified areas within the District where water supply problems existed or were projected to arise by 2020. The WSA 1998 was used to develop the District Water Supply Plan, 2000 (DWSP 2000). The WSA1998 was updated in 2003, and WSA 2003 was used as the basis for DWSP 2005, which focuses on water needs through 2025.
Work is currently in progress on WSA 2008 and DWSP 2010, which will address a planning horizon through 2030.
